Character Volpino Italiano

The Volpino Italiano is an active and playful companion. He is attached to his people and is loyal to them. He likes to bark at strangers. Alert and vigilant, he is protective of his pack and territory. The Volpino Italiano is assigned to the guard and companion dogs.

He used to be the companion of the nobility and the carters.
The Volpino Italiano adapts quickly to new circumstances. Due to the small size, he can live with his owners in the house or in the apartment. He is considered friendly towards other pets as long as they are accustomed to them. The Volpino Italiano makes a good family dog.

Since the dogs are very playful and full of energy, they also feel comfortable with children.
Volpino Italiano lace can be idiosyncratic. The strong and distinctive personality of the dogs should be steered in the right direction with consistent training. You should establish a clear hierarchy right from the start and show the little Italian that you can master any situation. Otherwise it could be that he guards you too closely and the barking gets out of hand.

Dogs of this breed enjoy all kinds of games and dog sports. They learn quickly and respond well to spoken commands and body language. You should schedule daily exercise to provide the dogs with the mental and physical exercise they need.
The Volpino Italiano comes from Italy. The dogs are small and have a compact appearance.

They are about as long as they are high and appear extremely voluminous due to their dense, long fur that sticks out from the body and forms a clear collar on the neck.
The colors white and red are breed standards, although champagne colors are also tolerated. The dogs carry the tail coiled on their backs. The head is pyramidal. The ears are triangular and erect.

The eyes should convey a lively and alert expression.

Diet Volpino Italiano

The diet of your little Spitz should always be tailored to its individual needs. Small, energetic dogs have high metabolic activity and burn calories more efficiently than larger dogs. Nevertheless, you should adapt the feeding to the activity level of your dog.
If you want to feed your Volpino Italiano a commercial food, it is best to choose a food that has been specially developed for small breeds. Depending on the age of your dog, you can choose between puppy, junior, adult or senior food.

You can also send your Volpino home-cooked meals. Here you can get advice from a veterinarian so that the diet is balanced and the dog gets all the nutrients it needs.
Snacks as rewards are popular. Make sure that the grain content in such snacks is as low as possible. Although the Volpino Italiano is a fairly resilient breed when it comes to disease, too much grain can lead to allergies.

Grooming

Volpino Italianos are difficult to care for. The coat should be brushed daily and the undercoat combed out well. This prevents tangles and skin diseases. Examine the surface of the skin at each grooming session and look for parasites such as ticks or fleas. Due to the hair loss during the change of fur, you may have to vacuum your apartment several times a day.

You don’t have to bathe the Volpino Italiano regularly unless it’s extremely dirty. The breed’s coat is self-cleaning and the dogs will gnaw dirt from their hair with great patience. You should regularly check and trim the claws of your Volpino. Due to the low weight of the dog, they often do not wear out sufficiently.

History

The Volpino Italiano has the same ancestors as the German Spitz. The breed has been bred in Italy for centuries. Nobility and people kept the dogs alike because of their pronounced vigilance. Carters and traders took the dogs with them on their journeys. Every stranger was loudly reported.

The painter Vittore Carpaccio immortalized a Volpino Italiano in his painting The Vision of Saint Augustine in 1502. And Michelangelo also had an “Italian fox”.
The standard for the breed was set in 1913 and by that time the dogs were very popular. After that, the breed lost attention for some time. White Volpinos reappeared in the 1960s and in 1972 the breed was re-registered.

Volpino Italiano Accessories

If you want to buy a Volpino Italiano, you should make a list of all the items you need as initial equipment. Toys are certainly very important to the “little foxes”. You will also need a food and water bowl as well as a leash and collar. Food is essential and your dog is just as happy about reward snacks. In addition, there are beds and blankets and grooming utensils.

Your breeder will often give you a “puppy pack” that includes, for example, the food that your puppy ate. This makes the transition and moving into the new home easier. You will also receive information when the next wormer treatment and vaccinations are due.
