The playful miniature tiger

To design something means to create something directly. However, this should by no means be overstated, as the term designer cat refers exclusively to the outcrossing of a trait. If a miniature tiger roams through the vastness of the living room, then this is a Toyger cat. The playful cuddly tiger therefore does not come from a gene laboratory and is the result of a simple mating of phenotypically similar parent animals, i.e. cats with a similar appearance.

Siegfried and Roy’s white tigers are the best example of this. The color mutation of these animals is a melanism found in many animal species. In nature, due to camouflage and survival strategy, they are certainly rare or no longer found at all, so the white tigers were then increasingly bred by humans. All tigers of this color variation found to date are the descendants of a single male tiger that was caught in India in 1951. The characteristic feature of the tiger , its striped pattern , also shows the Toyger cat. In contrast to the big cat, however, the toyger is a small, playful velvet paw.

History and Origin of the Toyger Cat

The Toyger Kittens were created by American cat breeder Judy Sudgen. In the 1980s, they began to specifically breed cats whose phenotype resembles a tiger in terms of fur markings. This selection has been known since the 19th century as a result of the Augustinian monk Gregor Mendel’s attempts at crossing plants. The fur colors of domestic cats are all derived from the three primary colors: black, red and white. These colors come in either dense or thinned out. The color blue is therefore a dilution of the color black. The fur pattern of the cats, on the other hand, is determined by the tabby pattern and the point pattern. If the tabby pattern is masked by another gene, the cat will be solid. The interplay between color and drawing is best perceived through the ghost drawing. This is particularly well known in the panther,

The basis for Judy Sudgen’s breeding program was a Bengal male named Millwood Rumpled Spotskin and a house cat named Scrapmetal. The Toyger cat has been officially recognized as a Californian Toyger by the WCF ( World Cat Federation ) and TICA ( The International Cat Association ) as its own breed standard since 2007. The name Toyger, on the other hand, is a combination of the terms: toy and tiger , i.e. a small toy tiger.

essence and character

The Toyger cat is a very cuddly, lovable and extremely playful creature. This cat was bred explicitly to be kept in the city or as an indoor cat. To get a better idea of the Toyger character, it’s worth taking a look at the original parents. The Bengal cat is naturally:

  • curious
  • playful
  • spirited
  • active

The domestic cat, on the other hand, is very affectionate and affectionate, but also cuddly, cheeky and moody. The pleasant nature of the Toyger cat can thus be summarized as follows:

  • playful
  • cuddly
  • curious
  • very intelligent

The Toyger cat’s hunting instinct is no longer comparable to that of a wild cat or that of a tiger. The affectionate character and the beautiful appearance of the animals is a fascinating example of a pure house and apartment cat.

Appearance of the Toyger cat

The appearance of the Toyger gives a direct indication of their origin. Even with the original parents, the domestic cat and the Bengal cat, it is noticeable that they also took a wild big cat as their role model. The Bengal cat is the result of a cross between an Asian leopard cat and the domestic cat. The coat pattern of the Toyger is particularly striking. This is a brown tabby pattern, the Brown Tabby Mackarel , which appears as a brown mackerel. The extremely hardy coat is short, but still dense and soft.

The athletic and strong appearance of the cat weighing up to 5 kg or the male tomcat weighing up to 6 kg is rounded off by a broad chest and medium-length legs. The head resembles that of a domestic cat and has rather small ears with slightly rounded tips. Eye color varies between green and yellow. In summary, the following picture emerges:

  • Build: Strong and athletic with medium length legs
  • Head: broad with small rounded ears
  • Eyes: Round and deep set, colored green or yellow
  • Fur: short and soft
  • Coat Pattern : Brown Tabby Mackarel, a distinct tiger pattern

attitude and care

The Toyger cat is particularly known for its easy care and lovable nature. It is therefore the ideal cuddle package in the city and country apartment. If it has a balcony, it should be professionally furnished and secured. Known as an indoor cat, the breed also loves to go on outings in the home garden. A Toyger cat is generally classified as easygoing. This is already evident in grooming, which tends to require less attention.

You should pay a lot of attention to your very playful Toyger. The intelligent animals can get bored quickly and should therefore be kept busy. Apart from that, the Toyger Kitten is a real cuddly kitten that is resistant to diseases. Hereditary diseases are therefore rarely found in the animals. Furthermore, the breed is considered very fond of children and is a good playmate.

Outdoor cat or indoor cat?

Of course, the Toyger is not just an indoor cat. While she was bred as such, she also loves to frolic around on a farm or in a garden. The playful and yet balanced character of the Toyger kitten is rather undemanding and left to its own devices. If the cat is kept exclusively in an apartment, it should be equipped cat-friendly. That means setting up a feeding place, a place to sleep and securing the balcony and inventory are to be carried out like with any other cat.

How much activity does the Toyger cat need?

Due to its very intelligent nature, the Toyger cat prefers variety. The cat or tomcat can be integrated in a single household as well as in a family. They don’t need a run, but should get a daily dose of attention. Cuddling and playing are among the activities that are very good for the animal. The Toyger cat is not a loner and needs a lot of company. If this is not possible for you as the owner, it is advisable to get a second cat.

grooming and feeding

Cats are pure carnivores and as such are fed accordingly. It is possible to feed the Toyger with fresh meat or offal , as well as the well-known dry or wet food. However, one-sided feeding can also lead to deficiency symptoms in every animal. This can be noticed very quickly in the coat quality. In addition to high-quality cat food, the cuddly tiger can also be fed with raw meat according to the BARF method (Biologically Adapted Raw Food). Here, however, care should be taken to ensure that the meat is tested.

Every cat owner should also know that there are healthy and toxic food components for cats. The Toyger should therefore never be fed chocolate, grapes or cocoa. Stone fruit in particular develops toxins in the cat’s stomach, which are therefore poisonous for the animal. The same applies to leeks such as garlic, chives and onions. Even some types of meat and fish should only be fed in moderation. While too much liver can lead to bone problems and kidney damage due to its high vitamin A content, too much tuna causes heart and eye problems. This is due to the methylmercury, which is disproportionately contained in this fish. Apart from that is theCaring for and feeding the Toyger is extremely easy and unproblematic. A light brushing is often sufficient for grooming.

Acquiring a Toyger cat

If you would like to get a Toyger cat, you should contact a reputable and registered breeder. The young Toyger kitten should also be at least 12 weeks old in order not to be traumatized. While price ranges for the cat or tomcat are usually between 1,000 euros and 1,600 euros , successful breeding animals from a well-known Toyger breeder can quickly achieve prices of over 3,500 euros. You can recognize a reputable Toyger breeder by the fact that he is registered in the international cat association TICA. Furthermore, the Toyger kitten should have the following documents:

  1. vaccination card
  2. EU pet passport
  3. health certificate
  4. chip mark
  5. pedigree
  6. Purchase contract

Interesting and worth knowing

The Toyger is particularly striking because of its tiger pattern. Unlike other tabby cats, the coat pattern does not run. This means that the cat stands out with clearly defined stripes from the head to the tip of the tail. A tabby is therefore referred to as a multi-colored coat, which stands out either through a stripe pattern or a spot pattern. As a result, every cat has cross-species gene loci, all of which are located on the autosomes. Only one gene, the so-called orange locus for the colors red, cream and apricot, is located on a sex chromosome, the X chromosome.
