Portrait of the noble pedigree cat

The Russian Blue  is an elegant breed of cat best known for its distinctive blue coat color. Here in the profile you get information about the origin, the character and the attitude of the breed.

History and Origin of the Russian Blue

The Russian Blue is an ancient breed of cat that was popular at the court of the Tsars and was given away between royalty. From the 17th century , the cat was said to have made its home on the White Sea coast, near the port city of Arkhangelsk. The breed has been known by a different name for a long time, although it originally comes from Russia. In the meantime, breeders called the cats Blue Archangel or Russian Shorthair.

Only at the beginning of the 20th century did cat breeders agree on the uniform name Russian Blue. Since the population was severely decimated during World War II, they bred Blue Point to preserve the breed. Unfortunately, the original appearance was lost as a result and breeders are now trying to breed out the Siamese touch again. Over the years, three distinct lineages of the cat breed developed. A distinction is made between the strong English, the shy Siberian and the outgoing American type. All three variants and their mixtures can be found in Europe.

essence and character

The nature of the Russian Blue is fascinating and versatile. On the one hand she is frugal and calm, but on the other hand she can also be spirited and wild. In general, however, she is an even-tempered cat who has a strong bond with humansbuilds up. Russian cats prefer to sleep near their owners or even in bed with them, but are never intrusive. However, they are rather reserved towards strangers and the breed does not tolerate noise particularly well. In order to feel good, the sensitive cat prefers a regular daily routine and the company of a caregiver. The intelligent cats are curious and playful, making them quick to learn new skills. If they want, the jumping animals can open doors and climb high cupboards. However, her careful and considerate nature ensures that nothing gets broken. In summary, the Russian Blue is an ideal cat for a  quiet couple or an individual.

Appearance of the Russian Blue

The Russian Blue is an elegant, long-legged, shorthaired cat with a slim build. The special feature of the Russian Blue is its so-called double coat, with the top hair being the same length as the undercoat. The fur is protruding and particularly silky soft. As the name suggests, the coat color is always blue or blue-grey. Any shading, white spots or tabby markings are not allowed. At a young age, the cats can still be slightly mackerel. Thanks to the colorless hair tips (tipping) , the blue fur shimmers silvery in the light. The elegant Russian has a graceful pose and a square head with a smiling mouth. The large, almond-shaped eyes develop an emerald green color in adults.

attitude and care

Acquisition of a Russian Blue

If you want to get your own Russian Blue, you will find numerous reputable breeders in Germany. Unfortunately, there are more and more scammers on the internet who don’t sell purebred or even sick cats at high prices. So it is best to make sure that the breeder belongs to the Association for Russian Blue Breeders. This is the only way you are guaranteed to get a purebred and healthy kitten. Of course, you will then pay significantly more with prices of around €700, but it is worth it. The kittens are usually already housebroken, vaccinated, dewormed and microchipped. If you want to help an animal in need, you might find something in the animal shelter.

Outdoor cat or indoor cat?

The Russian Blue is a frugal breed of cat that is also happy to be kept indoors. Unexpected outdoor situations can even overwhelm the sensitive cat and scare strangers. Secured access in a fenced garden or on the balcony are the better alternative, depending on the possibility. The cat is also one of the breeds that you can even walk with on a leash once you get used to it. Even with working people, the Russian is in good hands with enough scratching and climbing opportunities. She is happy about a conspecific to cuddle and play with. In addition, the intelligent cat would like to be challenged and needs demanding employment opportunities without being allowed to go outside.

How much employment does the Russian Blue need?

Although the Russian Blue is a calm and easy-going breed of cat, there is a little predator in them too. It doesn’t require much, but it does require challenging work. Most feline intelligence toys are quicker to figure out than many other breeds. It’s best to switch back and forth between different so that it doesn’t get boring. The athletic cat also wants to live out her sporting skills on a regular basis. One or more scratching posts and enough space to run around should therefore be available. Daily cuddle sessionswith their favorite person should not be missing. The Russian cat prefers to observe the surroundings from a raised lookout and to relax in peace and quiet.

grooming and feeding

The care of the cats is not particularly complex. Brushing the short coat once a week is enough to remove loose hair. Of course, the cuddly cat should not be without daily strokes. Feeding is just as uncomplicated and you do not have to attention to any special features. It is enough to offer the cat a protein-rich, healthy diet without sugar and preservatives.

Interesting and worth knowing

  • The Russian Blue is often confused with the  Carthusian cat  , but the latter is more heavily built, plumper in appearance and has orange eyes.
  • Since the breed hardly loses any hair and only produces a small amount of glycoprotein Fel d 1, it is considered to be particularly allergy-friendly.
  • In the 1980s, the Americans bred a medium -haired Russian Blue that is now recognized as a separate breed called the Nebelung cat.
  • The Russian cat is a natural breed , meaning it was not deliberately bred.
  •  The first prominent male of this type was Vaska, the favorite male of the Russian Tsar Peter I.
