The muzzle of a Podengo Português is slightly shorter than its skull.
Podengos make good guard dogs, but are also popular as family or companion dogs. However, you have to be careful to satisfy their hunting instinct. You can achieve this through consistent training or, in the case of the two larger varieties, by participating in dog sport events.
The Podengo has a lively, inquisitive character, is very intelligent and loves to learn.

All sizes of the breed need plenty of exercise, although you can keep a medium and small Podengo in a city apartment. But then you often have to take him for a walk.
He is very social, so let him play with other dogs regularly. The Podengo Português tends to bark. But you can break that habit with consistent training.

While the large varieties live for around 15 years, smaller Podengos can live as long as 17 years.

Diet Podengo Portuguese

You should feed the Podengo like any other dog breed: Lots of nutrients and good taste are important. At the same time, it depends on the size of your dog. The Podengo Português Grande has a larger musculoskeletal system and therefore needs more protein.

Both short-haired and wire-haired Podengos are considered relatively easy to care for. You only need to brush him when he changes his coat, which is once a year. Brush off his falling hair with a rubber brush. In addition, the Podengo can cope with different weather conditions and also feels comfortable in the colder months.
Portuguese dog breeding pays less attention to beauty ideals and more to certain performance criteria.

For this reason, the Podengo Português is extremely robust.

The ancestors of the Podengo Português were dogs that originated in northern and eastern Portugal and were hardly uniform in size and coat. Efforts to systematically record the breed only began in 1933. Six varieties were established, which are still valid today. 21 years later, in 1954, the official breed standard for the Podengo Português was set.
This Portuguese national breed was originally used to hunt rabbits.

Larger varieties were also suitable for being used on larger game such as wild boar.  Nowadays there are two types of hair, wire-haired and short-haired. According to today’s standard, there are also three sizes of the Podengo Português.
