Character Podenco Canario
With a size of 53 to 64 centimetres, the Podenco Canario is one of the medium-sized dogs. He is slim and muscular and thus already has the perfect basic requirements for a good hunting dog. It weighs between 20 and 30 kilograms and has almost no sub-fatty tissue. His smooth, dense coat is mostly white-orange. Different shades of color are not uncommon.
The Podenco Canario has an elongated head with amber eyes. The ears are pointed upwards. The Podenco Canario falls into FCI group 5, Spitz and archetypal dogs.
The athletic dog was trained from the start to be a hunting dog and that is still its main area of application today. In the house he seems reserved and you hardly notice him.
However, if you take him outside, he shows how spirited he actually is.
He has a strong hunting instinct, but does not behave aggressively. The dog needs a strict hand when it comes to training. Even if he is quite temperamental outside, his nature is friendly and he loves his master unconditionally. He feels most comfortable in a stress-free environment where he can move freely and a lot.
The Canary Podenco is only conditionally suitable as a family dog.
Diet Podenco Canario
The daily required calorie intake of the Podenco Canario is around 1200 calories. Of course, it also depends on how active the dog is. As far as the type of food is concerned, the Podenco is not particularly picky. However, he should get enough vitamins and minerals. The Podenco loves treats and often cannot resist begging.
Make sure you don’t over-indulge him with the little treats too often, even though his puppy dog eyes are hard to resist.
The Poodenco Canario’s short coat is easy to groom and all that is needed is a brushing once in a while. On the other hand, you have to invest more time in keeping the dog busy. Long walks and tasks where the dog can live out its hunting instinct are a must for every Podenco Canario owner. The Podenco Canario is quite robust and rarely gets sick.
Experts do not quite agree on the origin and history of the Podenco Canario. One thesis says that it is related to the Tesem. The Tesem is an ancient Egyptian breed of dog that is now extinct. And indeed: If you compare the Podenco Canario with the dogs in pictures from ancient Egypt, there is no denying the similarity.
Another, more likely, theory is that the dog originated in the Canary Islands.
Of course, he can also have gotten there from Egypt via detours. On the Canary Islands you can still find the most specimens of the Podenco Canarios. There the dogs are used to hunt rabbits and hares because they are excellent trackers.
Podenco Canario Accessories
Podencos are sighthounds and that means they need exercise. They love to exert themselves. Toys with a lot of running potential are therefore part of the accessories for Podencos. Because the Podenco originally hails from warmer climates, it might get a bit cold for him in winter. You can therefore think about getting a dog coat for the Podenco.
