Diet Peruvian hairless dog

Peruvian Hairless Dogs are very slim and should be kept slim too. In general, however, this breed is not prone to excessive weight gain. The missing teeth do not prevent the adorable hairless dogs from eating. You can feed your four-legged friend with both dry food and wet food. You can also feed your hairless dog BARF or the prey method.

It is important that you eat a balanced diet. Peruvian hairless dogs like to be a bit fussy. Make sure your four-legged friend always drinks enough water. The feed should also be grain-free and sugar-free.

Grooming

This breed of dog is more about grooming than grooming. They should not be bathed too often, otherwise the skin can dry out too much. Only a pH-neutral and mild dog shampoo may be used for bathing. To counteract the drying out of the skin, you can rub coconut oil on the dog.
In summer, these dogs also need effective sun protection.

You can use sunscreen for babies with a high sun protection factor, or put a t-shirt on your four-legged friend. This is particularly advisable on the beach and in the garden.
Otherwise, care is the same as for all other dog breeds. Make sure the claws don’t get too long. Check the ears and teeth regularly.

Tartar should be professionally removed by a veterinarian. The lack of fur also has an advantage. Ticks, fleas and other parasites can be easily spotted. In addition, hairless dogs are not necessarily known as a magnet for ticks and the like.

History

The origin of this breed is not exactly clear. However, it is believed that these dogs have been around for more than 3,000 years. Excavations and finds from the Moche culture already show images of this special dog breed. These first finds can be dated to around 750 BC. The hairless dogs were also considered a status symbol for the wealthy Incas.

Hairless dogs were revered and worshiped. The reason for this was that this dog breed was said to have a magical and mystical aura. It was assumed that Peruvian hairless dogs had a healing effect on joint pain and bone diseases. What is certain, however, is that it is a noble and extraordinary breed of dog – then as now.
