Character Hrvatski Ovcar

The Croatian Shepherd Dog is a dog breed recognized by the FCI. It grows up to 50 cm tall and weighs up to 16 kg. Its fur is all black, soft and of medium length. Occasionally, small white spots may also appear. The pointed head shape and muscular physique make him a very attractive dog.

The Croatian shepherd dog is often used as a companion dog. He is suitable for this due to his docility and his adaptability. In addition, he is very people-oriented.
Since he is very fond of children, you can also keep him as a family dog. However, he has a high protective instinct.

He always wants to keep his herd, his family, together. In Croatia, it is therefore mainly used as a herding dog.
In order to keep the Hrvatski as an uncomplicated family dog, consistent training is necessary right from the start. At best, you should attend a good dog school from the start. In this, your dog will be well socialized and you will learn how to deal with each other.

In addition to physical activity, mental activity is also very important. The Croatian Shepherd Dog is very intelligent. As a result, he understands new commands quickly and implements them without any problems.
In addition, he is extremely loyal and wants to fulfill every wish of his owner. Unlike other shepherd dogs, he also carries out commands when he doesn’t see the point.

The Croatian Shepherd Dog tends to be aloof with strangers, but forms a close bond when trusting them. He usually takes other dogs and cats into his pack quickly.

Diet Hrvatski Ovcar

The Croatian Shepherd Dog is not picky about food. A special type of food is not normally necessary for a healthy representative. If your dog moves a lot, food for active dogs is a good choice. These satisfy the increased need for nutrients in demanding sports such as agility.
Otherwise, you should generally look at the ingredients.

In this way you can ensure that the dog is supplied with all the important nutrients. Good quality feed contains a lot of meat and no sugar. Vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fiber and proteins in the right composition help your dog to stay fit and active for a long time.

Grooming

Grooming is an important issue for the Croatian Shepherd Dog. His medium-length coat should be brushed regularly to prevent tangles. You should also remove dirt and twigs from their fur after every walk. In addition to grooming, there are ear trimmings and nail clippings.
Normally, the Hrvatski rarely has to go to the vet.

The dog breed is considered to be very healthy and without breed-typical diseases. You should always carry out vaccinations and check-ups with your dog.

History

The Croatian Shepherd Dog, as the name suggests, comes from Croatia. He lives there mainly near the Hungarian border. The dog breed Hrvatski ovčar, as it is called in Croatia, has been known for over 1000 years. It is traditionally used as a herding dog, but is becoming more and more common as a guard, family and companion dog.
Breed standards were introduced for the first time in 1951.

An official recognition of the breed followed later. In 1968 the Hrvatski ovčar was officially accepted by the FCI in the sheepdog category. Nevertheless, the Croatian shepherd dog has hardly established itself outside of the Balkans.

Hrvatski Ovcar Accessories

A curry comb is suitable for grooming the Croatian Shepherd Dog. Dead hair that does not fall out by itself is removed when combing. You should use this once or twice a week. A mild, perfume-free dog shampoo is suitable for bathing. However, you should only bathe your dog in an emergency and if it is very dirty.

A good pair of claw clippers is particularly worthwhile for dogs that don’t walk much on asphalt. Claws that are too long should always be trimmed. Special dog shoes can be purchased for the winter months, which protect the sensitive paws from road salt and cold.
In addition, the normal accessories such as a leash, collar and harness should be available. Bowls, toys and sleeping space are also part of the basic equipment.
