How to pet a cat. Three main rules
When we just think about getting a cat, we immediately imagine how cute we will sit together on the couch, how we will stroke and love her. But sometimes this dream ends with scratches and bites. Most often this happens because we forget that the cat has its own personal boundaries. In this article, we learn not to break them and stroke the cat correctly.
First: do not forget that not all cats like to be petted.
Attitude towards a person is laid in cats at a very early age – up to 8 weeks. From how the cat was treated during this period, his love for caresses and touches largely depends.
Therefore, if a kitten had a difficult childhood on the street, he may be a little shunned by people. And if he grew up with a loving breeder, he can adore affection. However, this is not the rule. And sometimes everything can happen exactly the opposite.
In addition, genetic predispositions that are inherent in nature itself are not excluded. So, there are more contact breeds of cats, such as sphinxes or ragdolls, there are more independent ones, such as the Norwegian Forest.
Therefore, it is important to start to learn more about your cat: is it afraid of a person, how much it is predisposed to communicate with a person.
Also, do not forget about the character. Yes, cats have it too. This does not mean that they do not like you, they may simply not like excessive amounts of communication.
Second: do not forget that everything can change
Cats need a human and love, and your attitude can change any cat.
So, if the most affectionate cat was uncomfortable during hugs and strokes, it may want to avoid these situations and refuse to go to the owner’s arms.
Therefore, it is important to approach the issue of stroking and hugging very carefully. Owners must learn to understand when a cat does not want to communicate, and when it is pleasant for her to sit on her knees and get her share of tenderness.
Cats can tell you when they want petting, and it’s very easy to understand this language: they themselves come to a person, rub against their legs and jump on their knees. If the pet runs away, breaks out, avoids, you do not need to catch it. It is better to wait for the moment and play for a long time.
Playing for the long haul is about building a trusting relationship between you. The owner must be predictable: do not drive the cat out of bed if it was always allowed to be there, for example.
The owner must be kind and affectionate, even when angry. Cats do not understand human language, so your raised voice will not be able to help in a difficult situation.
The owner must provide the cat with the necessary: physical activity, love and, most importantly, a proper and tasty diet. The latter can become one of the fundamental factors in both maintaining the health of the cat and its relationship.
Third: Always be respectful of feline boundaries
How a cat behaves can be influenced by many different factors: the weather, the presence of strangers in the apartment, poor health, fatigue, and just mood. All of this can change, so it’s important to respect your cat’s boundaries and give her space to be alone.
It is important not to wake the cat without her desire. You should not interrupt the dream of your pet because of the desire to give her love at this very moment. It is also important not to disturb her when it eats, drinks and goes to the bathroom.
Do not forget about your favorite areas for “scratching”: most of all, cats love to be scratched in the areas of the ears, under the chin, as well as long strokes on the back. Always stop if the cat tries to run away and strains the whole body.
If you follow these simple rules, you will definitely get in touch with your cat. Love to you and warm communication!
