Character hovawart

Typical of the Hovawart is the powerful head with large, gentle eyes and the triangular hanging ears. The body is elongated and athletic. The dog’s posture is upright with expansive movements. He is a persistent, vigorous and alert.
The sexes of this breed are very easy to tell apart.

Female animals have a slimmer head and reach a height of 58 to 65 cm at the withers. In males the head is strong, broad with a clearly convex forehead. They reach heights at the withers between 63 and 70 cm.
The Hovawart is available in three color patterns. Black marks are dogs with a dark upper coat and light-colored belly and bib.

Other markings are on the face, above the eyes and on the sides of the muzzle. Blond is the off-white dog type. Occasionally, blonde Hovawarts are mistaken for Golden Retrievers. However, the Hovawart’s physique is more elongated and the coat more wavy. Finally, it is still available in pure black.

This coloring is rare.
A former working and farm dog, the Hovawart enjoys being outdoors and active. He is not suitable as a pure apartment dog. These pedigree dogs are for active people who enjoy exercise. The dog should be given full-time activity.

Staying on a large plot or in the garden can make a Hovawart happy. Nevertheless, the dog needs additional exercise and walks. If he accumulates too much energy, he can develop hypersensitivity. This is occasionally shown by an exaggerated protective instinct.
A young Hovawart is only partially suitable for beginners.

He needs safe and loving guidance. A weak owner is very quickly overwhelmed by these dogs. You need clear communication and firm boundaries. Only then will this extremely alert dog feel comfortable and safe.
Hovawarts are great family dogs for active people.

It is suitable for individuals if there is enough free time. He is happy to accompany you on your bike, for jogging or dog sports. Hovawarts can have a strong hunting instinct. Better to keep him on a leash in the field and near forests. The dog should be allowed to let off steam regularly.

Dog playgroups or joint sports such as agility or tracking are also suitable for this.
Because of its size, the breed has long struggled with hip dysplasia (HD for short). This disease in the Hovawart has now been well suppressed through breeding selection.

Diet hovawart

Feeding the Hovawart is uncomplicated. All types of high quality dog food are suitable for this breed. As with all other dogs, you should ensure a balanced diet. It should contain a lot of quality ingredients. Complete feed usually contains all the important vitamins, minerals and trace elements.

Hovawarts are very athletic dogs and usually metabolize carbohydrates very well. Nevertheless, you should pay attention to a high meat content in the feed. One often hears the opinion that carbohydrates are absolutely unsuitable for dogs. Such teachings refer to the diet of the wolf as a point of reference. In the meantime, however, this has been scientifically refuted.

The dog is no longer a wolf.
Millennia of domestication have adapted its digestion to carbohydrate-rich diets. Always pay attention to the quality of grain, rice and other plant-based ingredients. By-products that are not specified should only be contained in small amounts.
If you have a puppy in the house, the diet is a little different.

The needs of young dogs are very different than those of adult animals. It is best to get advice from the breeder. At first he can give you a ration of the usual food. If you want to feed something else, you should switch slowly.
This means that you mix new food with the old slowly and in small portions.

Then you increase the proportion of the new food every day. There are special mixtures for young dogs. They cover the increased need for energy, protein and vitamins.
Adult Hovawarts can get any wet or dry food from quality-conscious manufacturers. They are also suitable for fresh meat feeding.

The BARF diet looks like the gift of raw fresh meat. In addition, the dog gets grain and vegetable food via ready-mixes. Fresh meat is also suitable as a special bite even with a normal diet. Of course it can also be boiled. Many dogs love it when you put some meat broth over the dry food.

Grooming

How much effort grooming requires also depends on what you do with your dog. A Hovawart who rages outside a lot will drag a lot of dirt into your apartment. Twigs, grass and other small objects from the forest and fields tend to get stuck in the medium-length fur. Despite the extra effort involved in grooming, you should allow your dog these joys in nature.
The Hovawarts’ medium-length hair requires regular brushing.

On the one hand you can remove plant parts and dirt in this way. On the other hand, you always remove dead hair from the fur before it can become matted. In addition, your dog will look beautifully shiny again after brushing. The fur of a Hovawart should always shimmer slightly and play around the dog’s body in loose waves.
Parasites can quickly nest in an unkempt coat.

In some cases, these are not immediately apparent. They can get stuck in the underfur under the armpits or in other warm places. It is very similar with ticks. In order to find these uninvited guests, you should examine the dog intensively several times.
In winter, clumps of snow or mud can accumulate in the fur and between the pads.

Many dog owners have a fixed grooming ritual before entering the home. As a rule, your dog gets used to it quickly and will not push. A garage or the garden are perfect for removing the worst of the dirt from your dog.
You may need to trim the hair between the pads occasionally. You should also cut out matted sections of hair.

History

The Middle High German word Hova means the farm and we still know the warden as the guard . So Hovawart simply means court guardian. For a long time, the term was a designation for farm dogs of all kinds. Mentions of the Hovawart can already be found in writings from the Middle Ages. Unfortunately, the appearance of these dogs has not been handed down.

At the end of the 19th century, the Hovawarts were described for the first time, which clearly corresponded to today’s breed standard. After the First World War, the actual breeding was established. Two gentlemen named Bertram and Kurt Friedrich König were looking for a special type of dog. He should be alert and react to the situation. Breeding was aimed at protection dogs.

He eventually built his kennel on a stock of local farm dogs.
German Shepherds, Newfoundlands, Leonbergers and the Hungarian Kuvasz were crossed. According to legend, the king even brought in an African wild dog.
From 1937 the Hovawart was recognized as a separate breed. Today’s breeding is more oriented towards a family-friendly leisure companion.

The suitability as a protection and guard dog is still there, but has receded into the background.

hovawart Accessories

A harness or wide collar is suitable for the Hovawart. A harness always provides better support for dogs of this size. If you do have to intervene, you won’t choke your dog so easily with a harness.
The Hovawart has an uncomplicated build. Most large size accessories will fit him.

Since these dogs like to get dirty and wet, you should own several sets. Overall, you will have to wash your Hovawart’s equipment more often. Therefore, pay attention to easy-care materials. Leather can look chic, but it can also quickly become brittle if it is too wet and dirty.
The selection of a suitable dog bed is very similar.

Young Hovawarts in particular can be seized by sudden attacks of joy. A full plush dog bed may not survive the wild play of a hyper dog. Wicker or plastic baskets make more sense. Blankets and pillows can be exchanged more easily.
There are also plenty of dog toys and activities for large dogs.

It is important not to simply leave the Hovawart with toys to itself. You should spend enough time with your dog. Shared bike tours are ideal for working out. You can find special bike sets in accessory stores.
