Character Golden retriever

The Golden Retriever is a British breed of dog officially recognized by the FCI. He has a medium size with up to 61 cm. His physique is strong and he has long hair, which can be either straight or wavy. The fur is usually golden brown or cream in color. It is weatherproof with a dense undercoat.

It has medium sized floppy ears and a long tail and snout.
Originally, the Golden Retriever was bred for hunting. Here he had the task of fetching birds in particular. Because of this, the Golden Retriever is a good swimmer and loves the water. Nowadays you can keep this breed especially well as a family dog.

The Golden Retriever is very fond of children . He also has a balanced and agreeable nature.
He shows a strong fixation on his master or mistress and you can easily lead him. Because of these traits, you can also use the Golden Retriever as a companion dog for the disabled. But his strengths in tracking down drugs and explosives are also valued by the police.

Unfortunately, many Golden Retrievers suffer from certain hereditary diseases . These include above all elbow dysplasia and hip dysplasia. Epilepsy and other hereditary diseases are also recognized more often than average in this breed. Tumor formation is also frequently diagnosed. The Golden Retriever has a life expectancy of ten to twelve years.

Diet Golden retriever

When choosing the right diet, you need to consider a number of factors. On the one hand, weight plays a role here, but age also plays a role. Golden retrievers weigh between 30 and 40 kilograms. Added to this is his daily exercise. On average, the Golden Retriever eats about 1,400 calories a day, assuming an average weight of 35 kg.

As a puppy, your dog needs special puppy food. Here you should make sure that the protein content is low. You can tell whether you are feeding your dog correctly by looking at it. It should be well proportioned. The chest should be larger than the abdomen.

The coat also provides information about the right diet. If your dog is healthy, the coat will be shiny and your dog will be fit and agile.
The teeth are also white and healthy with the right choice of food. The feed should consist mainly of meat with a high proportion of innards and muscles. You can supplement this with herbs, fruits or vegetables.

You should be wary of ingredients like fructose or other types of sugar. It is best to alternate between wet and dry food. Dry food is slightly cheaper and the harder bits prevent tartar. Wet food is primarily more flavorful.

Grooming

Since the Golden Retriever has a long, thick coat, you should take enough time to groom it. The best way to do this is to use a brush and regularly comb the fur properly so that it does not become matted and retains its beautiful shine. In addition, dead hairs are loosened and the underhair is combed through. If the coat changes in the summer, then you have to comb the dog every day. Otherwise, brushing it once a week is enough.

You should also regularly clean your eyes and ears with a warm, damp cloth. The same goes for the paws. Small stones can hide here, which can cause pain and inflammation. This way you can also tell if the animal has injuries on its feet. You also have to keep the claws in good shape.

Normally these wear out with running. However, if the dog mainly moves on soft ground, then you have to trim the claws with the help of claw clippers. It is best to have a veterinarian explain the correct handling to you so that you do not cause your dog any pain.
If it gets cold and snowing outside, you should also grease the paws to protect them better. In order to clean your dog’s genitals as well, you should give him a bath every now and then.

Please use special dog shampoo here.

History

The origin of the Golden Retriever is clearly traceable. This is how this breed was bred by the 1st Lord Tweedmouth in the last century. From this came his dog “Nous”. It is preceded by an original Newfoundland breed that existed about 500 years ago. Breeding followed over the years with breeds such as the Tweed Water Spaniel, a black retriever, the Irish Setter and a sandy-colored bloodhound.

For this purpose, the dogs “Belle”, “Crocus”, “Ada”, “Cowslip” and “Primrose” were crossed. An ancestor of the Golden Retriever is also the St. John’s dog. The Golden Retriever was first entered in the Stud Book in 1913 under the name Flat-coated Retriever. The Kennel Club first officially recognized the breed in 1913.

It was characterized by its special buoyancy and was a good size to be able to transport it easily by boat. In addition, this breed was particularly happy to fetch.
These traits have been retained and further reinforced through breeding. The Golden Retriever experienced its boom in the early 80s, when it was often seen on TV in commercials and films. Today he is one of the most popular house dogs in Germany.

This also applies to Scandinavia, Benelux and France.

Golden retriever Accessories

Dog ownership requires a wide variety of accessories. The basic equipment includes above all a thick, stable collar and a solid leash . Here you can choose a classic leather or fabric leash or one with a retractable mechanism. Please pay attention to the specified weight to guarantee tear resistance. Alternatively, you can also use a dog harness .

You can also put a flea collar on your dog to protect it from fleas. At home, your golden retriever should have a basket with a blanket so that it has a permanent place. Use a variety of grooming tools like a brush, comb, and nubbed glove . This is used to massage your dog and stimulate blood circulation.
It is also a good idea to get tick tweezers so that you can remove ticks quickly if necessary.

Your dog also needs its own food and water bowl , which should preferably be non-slip.
You should also get toys , like a rope or ball, to keep your dog occupied. Treats should always be on hand as a reward. A chewing bone also supports dental health. You can also get a dog whistle to emphasize your command .

If you take your dog with you in the car, it needs a special seat belt. A dog guard is just as important so that he cannot jump out of the trunk.
