The most important visual feature of the breed is its low stature . The animals have very short legs and are therefore extremely close to the ground.

In addition, their elongated, slender body is a striking feature. Dachshunds have large long floppy ears and faithful dark eyes.
Basically, the breed can be divided into three subspecies today: the standard dachshund, the miniature dachshund and the rabbit dachshund. The latter is particularly small and light.
All of these subspecies can also have three different coat structures.

The hair variants are divided into short-haired, long-haired and wire-haired dachshunds . Depending on the hair structure, certain characteristic behavior patterns are noticeable. This is due to the crosses with other breeds of dogs that have left their mark on the animal’s nature.
The Kurhaardachshund have a short, smooth and close-fitting coat. The fur is silky shiny and there are no bald spots.

Wire-haired dachshunds have a thick, wiry coat. This is also equipped with an undercoat. A kind of beard forms on the muzzle of this species of dachshund.
Long- haired dachshunds , on the other hand, have long straight hair. This is very soft and shines optically.

In particular, the tail of the animals and the hind legs are covered with very long fur.
Dachshund fur can vary greatly in color. From monochromatic shades of brown or black to blotches, shades or currents, anything is possible. The intensity of the color tones in particular varies greatly.
Dachshunds have strong personalities.

Even though they are cute little dogs, they definitely don’t let themselves be kept as lap dogs. The typical characteristics of the animals include courage, perseverance and a strong will. Despite their small size, Dachshunds are incredibly confident. These animals are rarely found to be shy or insecure.
Dachshunds are considered headstrong dogs.

Nevertheless, the animals are easy to train and can learn a lot . The active, nimble four-legged friends are easy to train and like to move around.
The breed is generally considered friendly, but has a temperament of its own. Dachshunds don’t get along well with everyone right away. However, the small four-legged friends very rarely show aggressive behavior.

They just have their own mind and a very special charm.

Diet dachshund

In order to be able to guarantee the long life expectancy of the animals, the right nutrition is important. This should be healthy and balanced. The animals should be able to absorb all the necessary nutrients through their feed.
Vitamins also play a role in the nutrition of four-legged friends. Any deficiencies should be avoided.

The dachshund is generally regarded as a robust and vital breed of dog. As for his food, the dog should get what he likes.
Treats in between are allowed in moderation. When feeding the dogs, care should be taken to ensure that the dog does not become overweight. This would give the little four-legged friend a hard time.

Obesity is often the trigger for unsightly diseases such as paralysis of the Dachshund. Of course, these should be avoided at all costs.

Dachshund grooming depends heavily on their hair structure. Depending on the length and structure of the fur, the time required varies.
Rough hard dachshunds in particular are more demanding when it comes to grooming. The wiry hair should be trimmed from time to time. Regular brushing of the coat also applies to wire-haired and long-haired dachshunds.

Dirt tends to get caught in long hair, which can only be removed by regular washing.
Dachshunds do not have great demands on a special habitat. The dogs can be kept well both in apartments and on large yards. However, the animals should not climb stairs , at least not regularly. Her low-lying physique is not suitable for this.

However, the little four-legged friends love to run. It’s amazing how fast dachshunds can run and how stamina they have. The breed is therefore even suitable as a companion when jogging or cycling. Dachshunds generally get along well with other dog breeds. However, there can be complications with other pets. This is due to the animals’ strong hunting instinct. Don’t be surprised if your dachshund chases after rabbits or squirrels like crazy.
If you own other pets, the behavior of the dogs can be changed with the right training.

Dogs are creatures of habit. With the right education, all obstacles can be overcome.

The history of the “Dachshund” goes back a long way. Even in the days of the ancient Egyptians, there were drawings of dogs that were confusingly similar to today’s dachshund. Even then, the outstanding personality of the animals is said to have been used for work purposes.
In 1888 the first dachshund club was founded in Germany. This is the second oldest breed breeding club in Germany.

With its establishment, the breeding of modern dachshunds began.
Dachshunds were used primarily as working dogs for hunting. Because of their size, they were sent into caves and burrows to lure the animals that lived there out of their hiding places. The courage of the dachshund and its agile nature made this breed extremely popular as a hunting dog. Hardly any other breed of dog is as confident and fearless as the dachshund.

Dachshunds were also popular when hunting foxes and rabbits. Today the dachshund is the only small dog that is still regularly used as a working dog.
