Portrait of the cat breed with wavy fur

Active and social, the  Cornish Rex is a very special curly-coated cat breed. Here you can learn everything about the history, husbandry and care of the English cat breed.

History and Origin of the Cornish Rex

The first Cornish Rex cats came about through natural mutation in the 1950s . Farm cat Serena gave birth to a curly-furred kitten on a farm in Cornwall. Her owners, Nina Ennismore and Winifred Macalister, named the boy Kallibunker and, on the advice of a geneticist, mated him back to his mother. Of the three kittens, two also had the curly coat and the breed was born. At the same time, another Devonshire breeder also discovered curly kittens in her litter. However, a mating of the offspring of both animals did not produce curly cats and so two separate breeds were created. It was in Devonshire that the   cat originated and Kallibunker became the progenitor of the Cornish Rex cats.To preserve the breed, breeders bred it to other short-haired breeds such as the or Oriental Shorthair. The first representatives of the breed came to the USA as early as 1954 and only ten years later English breeders founded the Rex Cat Club.

essence and character

The Cornish Rex is an active and inquisitive cat breed that is inquisitive about exploring their environment. The affectionate and friendly cats love to jump and play. They have no problem with a noisy and varied environment with lots of people and do not show any fear of strangers. While considered adaptable , curly-haired cats can also be cheeky and boisterous. They have a wide range of different sounds with which they can communicate loudly. In general, the affectionate animals should not be alone often and need fellow animals to be happy. The animals also develop an intimate relationship with their two-legged friends.

Appearance of the Cornish Rex

Modeled after oriental cats, a lean and muscular body with extremely long legs is typical of the Cornish Rex. The athletic cats have a long, thin tail. Two bat-like, large ears and oval eyes sit on the slender head. The distinctive, short coat of the cat is curly or wavy and lies close to the body. The entire fur consists largely of unusually fine undercoat. Whiskers are also curled in some members of the breed. All coat colors are possible, but there must be no bare spots.

attitude and care

Outdoor cat or indoor cat?

Because the Cornish Rex has a very thin coat , they don’t do well as outdoor pets. Especially in winter, cats with their thin fur can’t stay outside long when it’s cold. You can still let the cat out under supervision when the weather is nice. A fenced garden or a secure balcony are ideal for satisfying the cat’s urge to move. However, she prefers to be nice and warm and prefers a cozy spot on the windowsill. A litter box and a scratching post are obligatory for pure apartment keeping.

How much exercise does the Cornish Rex need?

The Cornish Rex is an active cat breed that loves to jump and needs plenty of exercise. Due to their high level of intelligence, the active cats regularly need meaningful activities. They are always looking for new challenges and quickly learn complicated With patience, you can also teach the clever four-legged friend little tricks, such as making little figures or opening doors. A large scratching post for climbing and jumping as well as a diverse selection of toys make the Rex cat happy.

grooming and feeding

The Cornish Rex’s wavy coat requires no special grooming and only needs an occasional brushing. It is enough if you brush the fine hair with a soft brush and gently remove loose hair and dirt. Your four-legged friend will be happy about the additional cuddles. When feeding your Rex cat, you need to find a good balance. On the one hand, it needs more energy because of its thin fur, on the other hand, it tends to become overweight quickly. So make sure that you don’t give the house cat too little or too much food and that you provide it with all the important nutrients.

Purchase of a Cornish Rex

Before you get a cat as special as the Cornish Rex, you should also do some research. Since the cats are rather unknown in Germany, there is no uniform breeding association and you have to look for private breeders. When buying, you should make sure that the kittens don’t have any bald spots on their fur and that they look healthy all around. You should also take a close look at the parents. You can get a purebred and healthy kitten from a reputable breeder from €700.

Interesting and worth knowing

More Rex cats

The breed’s specially curly coat is the result of a natural mutation in the gene responsible for hair structure. This mutation has occurred independently in multiple locations and has produced several breeds of cats with curly coats. Since the phenomenon was first observed in a rabbit, breeders also named all these breeds like the rabbit Rex (Latin for king). Over time, in addition to the Cornish Rex, the , the and the German Rex emerged in Europe. Younger breeds with wavy coats include the LaPerm, Bohemian Rex, and Ural Rex.

Already knew?

  • What is absolutely unique about the Cornish is that it wags its tail like a dog when it is happy.
  • A variant of the Cornish Rex is known in the USA, which has a narrower and smaller head with pronounced oriental characteristics.
  • Because the breed’s unique coat bears a close resemblance to the Marcel Wave women’s hairstyle of the 1930’s, the cat was also known as the Marcel Cat.
