Character chow chow

The Chow Chow is one of the medium-sized dog breeds. On average, the dogs reach a height of approx. 48 – 56 cm. The adult animals usually weigh between 25 and 30 kg. The females are usually more delicate than the males.

These dogs are unique both visually and in character. Her appearance is strongly reminiscent of a lion. The Chow Chow exudes pride and dignity. His gait is very upright and his tail is always raised. This attitude reflects confidence and courage.

The physique of the dogs is broad and strong. The hind legs of the four-legged friends are very straight. This is a rarity in dogs. Another distinctive feature of the animals is their heads. This often resembles that of a teddy bear and is provided with thick plush hair.

His face is often occupied with several wrinkles. However, this does not correspond to the origin of the breed. It was bred on purpose to make this dog even more unique. The ears of the animals are relatively small, pointed and set high. Another rarity is the chow chow tongue.

It is not pinkish-reddish as usual, but has a blue color. The Chow Chow is the only breed of dog that has this trait. Overall, the dogs appear clumsy and immobile.
Another distinctive feature of this breed is their lush fur all over their bodies. Basically, the chow chow is divided into long-haired and short-haired animals .

However, the short-haired Chow-Chow has become very rare over the years, so that mostly long-haired conspecifics can be found. Both the long-haired and the short-haired dogs have very dense, lush and ragged fur. This appears plush and soft, making the dog appear much more powerful than it actually is. The long-haired specimens also have a kind of mane around their necks. This is also strongly reminiscent of a lion.

The nature of dogs is particularly special. Chow Chows are considered to be extremely idiosyncratic . The dogs have their own mind and are not particularly good at subordinating themselves. Chow Chows try to get their way and are difficult to dominate. They are also considered to be quiet animals.

You are relaxed and don’t get into a hectic rush. Also, chow chows are certainly not barkers . You take things slower.
Nevertheless, the plush fur noses are very intelligent . You can learn a lot and are very receptive.

However, this is only on the condition that the dogs want to learn. The chow-chow cannot be forced into anything. The dogs are also well suited as guards . They are very alert and observe their surroundings.
The Chow Chow is very fixated on its owner.

The decisive factor here is that the dog only chooses one person to whom it gives its full attention and loyalty. The chow-chow therefore has only one reference person. He builds an intimate bond with this person and is always loyal and loving towards her.
The reference person must take care of the four-legged friend and take over the training of the dog. The Chow-Chow is mostly distant and dismissive towards other people.

This can be problematic if the dog is to be kept in a family. The dog may not or only partially accept commands and orders from other family members.
He is focused on his caregiver and may not take the rest of the family seriously. Also, the dogs can quickly become jealous or feel neglected , especially if not enough time is invested in them.
You should like and, above all, appreciate the character of the dog.

Only then are you suitable as the owner of such a dog breed. In addition, you should already have experience with dogs.

Diet chow chow

A healthy bred Chow Chow is unproblematic in terms of nutrition . Balanced and nutrient-rich meals ensure vitality and make the animals robust.
Unfortunately, however, the Chow Chow is often plagued by allergies or other diseases.
Hypothyroidism is also more common in this breed of dog.
For this reason, many dogs must be fed a calorie-conscious diet.

This is often difficult and requires special advice. The life expectancy of the dogs reflects this. Many animals only live to be 8-9 years old these days. Normally, however, healthy Chow Chows have a much longer life expectancy of up to 12 years.
The health of the completely overbred dog breed is fundamentally affected.

Many animals are extremely sensitive to heat and tend to become overweight . This damages the joints and severely restricts the dogs’ mobility. Most chow chows also have breathing problems . They can hardly go for an hour’s walk without wheezing.

The Chow Chow is a demanding dog that is not suitable for everyone. He’s not very good as a family dog. The dogs are very serious and do not like to romp. They usually can’t do much with children and are therefore also unsuitable. The Chow Chow does not like to play, nor is it a stunt or trick dog.

The four-legged friends are also not suitable for participating in dog sports.
The dogs are kept busy on long walks . This can happen both in the country and in the city. The animals like to sniff and often hesitate to go on walks in this way. As an owner you should have a lot of patience.

They should be given their space and allowed to spend more time outdoors. However, the existing hunting instinct of the animals should be taken into account. Be careful, especially on trips into the wild. Now and then the stubborn, stubborn animals pick up the scent of potential prey and try to follow it.
The training of dogs depends on the bond between humans and animals.

A strong basis of trust is the key to success. The chow-chow can be led and trained quite well by its caregiver. However, he often does not listen to others. The four-legged friends need a patient and understanding owner.
Consistency and calm are of great importance in education.

Commands and orders alone won’t get you very far with these animals. The dogs are not anxious to please their humans. Instead, they have their own ideas and plans. The chow chow is therefore not particularly suitable for beginners and people with no experience in dealing with dogs.
Grooming the dogs’ fur is also complex and takes a lot of time.

The lush fur needs to be brushed thoroughly every day . This removes dirt and tangles. Dog wrinkles also need constant attention. They are regarded as veritable sources of inflammation and can quickly cause health problems for the animals. The wrinkles must be checked and cleaned daily.

This is to prevent nucleation.
Dogs ‘ eyes should also be under constant observation, as eye infections are not uncommon.

The Chow Chow is one of the oldest dog breeds. In its native country of China , the breed was already kept in ancient times. Here, the four-legged friends usually took on the role of watchdog and protection dog. The Chinese emperors in particular were great admirers of chow chows and had the dogs immortalized in the form of sculptures and paintings. With its special appearance, the Chow-Chow was suitable as a representative farm dog.

In the past, however, this breed of dog was also consumed as food in China. For a long time, dog meat was considered a delicacy. Fortunately, dog meat consumption is very rare in China these days. In any case, the chow chow has gained so much in esteem in recent years that the prices for such meat would simply be far too high.
Today the dogs are often considered as exhibit or show dogs.

The breeders try to change the look of the animals here. The dogs’ heads are explicitly bred in such a way that they look confusingly similar to a teddy bear.
The hair on the animals is also getting thicker and thicker, so that the dogs have to suffer from a number of complaints. When buying a chow-chow, you should therefore take a very close look. Sick or over-bred animals are a lot of work and certainly cannot lead a carefree dog life.

chow chow Accessories

The chow chow does not make any special demands on its habitat. It can be kept wonderfully in an apartment. However, the dog should be spared too much climbing stairs if possible. Since the dogs don’t like to play anyway and tend to be calm, no special accessories are required.
