Diet Brandlbracke

A hunting dog covers unbelievable distances during strenuous work every day. It can come together up to 150 kilometers. All his senses are strained. In addition, there is the impassable terrain that he overcomes. His training also requires a lot of energy.

Sufficient supply of nutrients, vitamins and minerals is of enormous importance. They keep him fit and healthy. Its skeleton, joints and muscles remain strong and supple. What special features do you have to consider for his needs? Would you like to put together the food for your four eyes yourself? Then you have to deal with ingredients. The right combination of proteins, fat and carbohydrates is extremely important.

Have you also thought about vitamins and minerals? Your active hunting dog needs vitamin E and selenium every day . The right interaction of calcium and phosphorus is important for the bones and skeleton. Sodium and zinc must also be present in the food in order to develop the sense of smell.
Do you use ready mixes? Due to the high energy requirement, you should give your dog fatty ready-to-eat food. The high fat content provides it with the necessary power.

Another advantage is that less feed is needed for a good supply. This relieves the stomach.
The protein content of the food must be adapted to the fat content . The protein in the food nourishes the muscles. Your Brandlbracke does not have an extended need for vitamins and minerals due to the movement.

Therefore, no additional doses need to be added to the balanced complete feed.
It moves badly on a full stomach. When should you feed Four Eyes? Too much food right before the hunt is bad. It’s best to feed him his big main meal the night before. He can store this energy for the next day.

Three hours before it starts, there is still a small portion. During the hunt he usually gets no food. Unless your dog is one of those animals that get a drop in blood sugar from strenuous work. Then he has to eat something in between.
During the hunt, however, the Brandlbracke must definitely drink water.

She is allowed to refresh her water balance every one to two hours. Better supply your hunting helper with fresh water in the forest. This way you can protect him and yourself from diseases.
You give your four-eyes the main ration of food in the evening. Two hours after the work is done is the right time for this.

Then his body had a chance to shut down. It can now optimally absorb the energy.

In itself, no special care is necessary. The coat of the Brandlbracke is insensitive. She herself makes no extraordinary demands on her owner. A dog hairdresser is also not necessary due to the short fur.
Due to the long stay outdoors, dirt and moisture are your constant companions.

When you get home, first dry your animal friend thoroughly. His fur doesn’t pick up as much dirt. Nevertheless, a bath is appropriate from time to time. A suitable dog shampoo helps with cleaning. You simply brush out dead hair and dust.

Get a high-quality fur brush for this. It must be suitable for short hair.
After every forest experience, you should search your four-eyed dog’s entire body. Did he get ticks ? What about burrs , awns and thorns ? Look carefully at the paws . Something quickly enters between the pads and can ignite.

But eyes, ears and whiskers are also places where foreign bodies easily collect.
A hunting dog regularly comes into contact with game. Blood, feces and urine can transmit parasites and diseases. Regular visits to the veterinarian are part of the program to care for your burnt hound. He will check for mites and fleas.

He also deworms and vaccinates your dog. Common diseases don’t stand a chance.

The history of the Brandlbracke goes back thousands of years. One of their ancestors, the Celtic hound, could already be that old. The reason is that bloodhounds were incredibly important to our ancestors. People needed enough food. Meat was a valuable, high-protein diet.

For this reason, they had to hunt for centuries. Such dogs were expensive at that time. They often ranked higher than horses in value. All they had to do was have a good sense of smell and the will to track.
In the 19th century, a start was made on breeding the widespread Bracken in a structured manner.

Different Bracken breeds emerged. In 1883, the Brandlbracke was established with its breed identification in Austria. She is originally an Austrian breed of dog . Two names are mentioned in connection with their breeding. One of those responsible is Karl Barbolani from Styria.

The other is the Duke Ludwig Wilhelm of Bavaria.
Only in 1996 did the FCI recognize the Brandlbracke as a breed. It was recorded under the number 63 as a standard and is one of the hounds and scent hounds. Today around 220 puppies are born in Germany and Austria every year. The Vieräugl is still rare, but is becoming increasingly popular.

Brandlbracke Accessories

At home, the four-eyes need a place where they can find peace and quiet. In return he gets a dog bed . You may decide to set up a kennel in the garden. He can stay there for a while. In addition to accessories for his food, he is also very grateful for toys.

At work, you may find it beneficial to have a high visibility vest . In bad weather conditions, your hunting helper is easier to spot. Some hunters use a bloodhound harness for tracking. A tracking line can also be useful.
A lot of training is necessary for your dog to become a trained bloodhound .

He needs to be trained from puppy age. There are books and DVDs that explain the work steps. Gradually, association tests are to be taken. The German Bracken Association e. V.

helps with the training and further education of the dogs and their owners.
