Character beagle

Beagles are happy hounds that need exercise. In the past, they were used to hunt rabbits in Great Britain. A dog for everyone who likes to be outdoors, hiking and can offer the dog enough activity. The Beagle is very intelligent, persistent and capable of learning without being short-tempered or even tireless. After work and exercise, they like to withdraw.

Beagles are now found all over the world. Wherever they appear, they spread their cheerful charm. The colorful coloring, the large, typical Beagle ears and the brown saucer eyes make the Beagle a buddy type among dogs.
Color markings are a hallmark of the Beagle. They are always mottled in two or three colors.

The fur is white in the basic color and shows various shades of brown tones. There are light brown to yellowish colored dogs as well as brown-red to almost black spotted animals.
Depending on their similarity, the drawings have very specific names. The badger-like ones are called badger-pied , the rabbit-like colored beagles are called hare-pied  , and the lemon-colored ones are called lemon-pied . Spotted dogs also occur and these are called mottles .

A very special feature is the always white tip of the tail. The Beagle’s tail stands up in a friendly excited manner.
The physique of the small, compact hunting dogs is stable to muscular. There are square and more rounded forms, the latter being mostly female animals. Depending on the breed, Beagles can be very stocky or a bit slimmer.

However, they never appear heavy, overbuilt or even beefy. There are beagles, which are among the small dog breeds, and slightly larger representatives, which represent medium-sized dogs.
The Beagle should not be confused with the very similarly colored English Foxhound. These are the typical pack dogs in fox hunts on horseback. Foxhounds are taller and leaner overall than the Beagle.

The beagle was originally a hunting dog used by poorer landlords who hunted small game such as hares and rabbits on foot.
When bored, Beagles tend to become frustrated and quickly gain weight. Sporty people who want to experience something with their dog are in demand. If you already have a Beagle, you will never get bored with this lively fellow. With a Beagle you can experience long walks in the great outdoors or have an active partner for sports such as jogging, cycling or agility.

You should only keep a Beagle as an only dog if you really have a lot of time or if you can even take your dog to work with you. As a single and apartment dog that is alone during the day, he is not suitable.
Incidentally, the most famous beagle in the world is Snoopy , the precocious companion of Charles M. Schulz’ cartoon character Charlie Brown .
A rather sad chapter in the history of the Beagle is its use as a laboratory dog for animal research purposes.

The Beagle has long been at the top of lists of laboratory animals because of its good nature and friendliness.
It is a welcome development that animal testing in general is on the decline and that many laboratory dogs are now being able to lead normal lives after testing. If you are considering adopting a Lab Beagle, you must be aware that it will take extra time, love, and patience.

Diet beagle

Beagles are easy on the diet, but share the same needs as other dogs. This means a balanced dog-friendly diet. Dogs need high-quality protein from meat and fish and much less grain than many foods unfortunately contain.
If you want to do something good for your dog, you should pay attention to a high meat content and protein sources in your food. Proteins from muscle meat are of course more valuable than those from unspecified animal meal or slaughterhouse waste.

Among the dogs, the beagle is one of the most greedy of all. You should get in the habit of feeding your dog at certain times, preferably twice a day. If there is absolutely nothing outside of the eating times, your dog will not become a pushy beggar. Beagles can be quite demanding and tricky when it comes to wringing an extra gift from their master or mistress.
For this reason, you should really only give treats when they are appropriate.

This can be as a reward for a special achievement or as part of a fixed ritual. This is how the Beagle gets to know its limits here too and you avoid overly demanding behavior.
If you have less time for your dog or an illness restricts its activity, you should reduce the food in good time. The beagle can quickly put on fat that you can hardly get rid of afterwards. In particular, castrated or sterilized animals are affected by weight gain.

When it comes to grooming, the affectionate Beagles also make easy companions. Your dog will do most of the grooming himself. Even so, brushing your Beagle regularly can be a nice ritual. Soft nub brushes or a special grooming glove are suitable for this.
This is how you get rid of dead hair, which can otherwise easily cause an unpleasant itch.

You also have the advantage that the fine hairs are not spread all over the apartment afterwards or get caught in the car seat.
The common care ritual can enormously strengthen the feeling of togetherness between humans and animals. Many dogs love it and relax during the brushing session. You can also massage the skin with soft nub brushes and ensure good circulation in the vessels directly under the skin.
The fur will then be very soft and shiny.

In older animals, regular massage can do wonders at the first signs of osteoarthritis or other joint problems.
Regular grooming, including touching all parts of the body, is good exercise for the dog. It is best to get your Beagle used to grooming from an early age. Along the way, you teach him to trustingly let himself be touched anywhere. In addition, you always notice small injuries, ticks or even the beginning of obesity.

The exact origin of the breed is not entirely clear. They probably came to Great Britain with French landed gentry. In the 11th century, the Norman Talbot family brought white Hubertus dogs to the island, which are now considered a founding breed of the Beagle. An early term for the beagle or beagle-like dogs was Talbot .
Another trail leads back to France at the beginning of the 14th century, during the Hundred Years’ War, namely to the south.

British officers reported enthusiastically about small variegated and very tough hunting dogs. Some of these intrepid hunters probably took them with them and with them established the Beagle’s typical coloring.
The word “Beagle” can mean “small” as well as “cheeky”. It is interesting that the first beagle dogs must have been really small. In 1515, the “Keeper of the Beagles” is mentioned for the first time in the inventories of King Henry VIII.

A somewhat more accurate description from the 17th century calls the “little beagle”, which would even fit comfortably in a rider’s saddlebag.
In a painting of Queen Victoria, several beagles are depicted at her feet, not much larger than the Queen’s shoes. In English usage, the word “beagle” has existed since the Victorian period for a form of hunting using a pack of small dogs. The Beagle has been officially recognized by the Kennel Club of Great Britain since 1890.

beagle Accessories

For a Beagle, you can buy regular leashes, collars, harnesses, and other accessories in small and medium sizes. The physique of the dogs is uncomplicated and most harnesses can be flexibly adjusted in size and width.
If your Beagle has an active hunting instinct, you will often need to leash him off-road. It is then good to have comfortable leashes of different lengths.
They should fit comfortably in your hand and not bother you when jogging, for example, and still give the dog enough space.

There are great accessories for sport together, special bicycle sets or belts for humans, to which a dog can be securely and flexibly attached.
Since Beagles are hunting dogs, you can make your dog happy with appropriate toys, games or even tracking. It is important not to let the dog jump up too much during games similar to hunting, but to create a calm balance for his needs with the game. You can also find accessories for tracking and toys in specialist shops.
