Red-tailed black shark (Epalzeorhynchos bicolor ) – freshwater aquarium fish of the carp family with a strong territorial instinct. The species probably became extinct in the wild.

Labeo comes from Asia . Under natural conditions, it inhabited flowing waters – rivers and streams of Thailand.

Characteristics and disposition

A slender fish with an elongated body, velvety-black coloration and an iridescent, red, forked caudal fin.

In aquarium breeding, it reaches a length of 15 cm. It is best to keep one individual in the aquarium . It shows a strongly developed territorialism. Clashes of adult fish in a tank that is too small may result in the death of weaker individuals. The sex of the fish is difficult to distinguish .

Females can be recognized by a slightly more rounded belly, less intense coloration and the rounded ends of the caudal fin. The dorsal fin of males forms a distinct point.

Nutrition and feeding

Labeo mainly feeds on algae and plant foods. They eagerly eat live food, e.g. pot-pots, water pipes, eyelashes, water larvae, mosquitoes and bloodworms.

It also accepts frozen and dry food.

Fish should be provided with rich vegetation, hiding places made of stones and roots, and a sandy substrate. It requires a large tank with a minimum length of 100 cm. The two-colored thicket inhabits the lower parts of the reservoir. May not be kept with red, free-swimming, and veil varieties.

For roommates, it is best to choose fish from the middle and upper parts of the water. The aquarium should be covered.

Oviparous species, difficult to reproduce in aquariums . It is very rarely possible to reproduce thick-lipped hair at home. Breeders use special hormones to stimulate spawning.

Due to the aggressive temperament of the fish, tanks with a capacity of 500-1000 l should be used. Soft water with a pH of about 6.5 and a temperature of 26-28 ° C is required. Spawning is preceded by a mating dance – the fish make strange movements by swimming around each other. Roe is scattered among the plants in the amount of about 30 grains. In the wild, Labeo spawned at the bottom in the pit.

The fry show up after 2 days.
