Hemigrammus bleheri (Hemigrammus bleheri) – freshwater fish often kept in plant aquariums.

Bleher’s armature comes from South America . It occurs in the basin of the rivers Rio Negro and Rio Meta in Brazil and in Colombia. It can be found in smaller, shallow, flowing waters.

Characteristics and disposition

A beautiful, calm, shoal of biting fish.

Red head and black and white caudal fin. The sex of the fish is very difficult to distinguish. Males may appear slimmer than females, especially during the spawning season. Reaches a length of 5 cm. She is shy and timid in a small group.

The minimum is 6 pieces, 10 or more recommended. The fish swim very nicely in the shoal. The species is often confused with such fish as: red-mouthed red-mouthed ( Rhodostomus ) and red-headed fish. It is only in the bleacher-rider that the red color of the head extends beyond the gill covers, and the black-and-white line running from the base of the tail along the lateral line is invisible. There are also differences in the shape of the caudal fin and the base of the anal fin.

The fish stay most of the time in the middle parts of the aquarium.

Nutrition and feeding

They consume dry, live and frozen fine food.

For a small group of fish, an aquarium of about 70 liters will be sufficient. They look best in densely overgrown aquariums with a dark substrate, remember to leave plenty of space for swimming. If we want them to feel like in their natural environment, we use a sandy substrate, roots and dry leaves.

Bleher fasteners are sensitive to high concentrations of nitrates, it is necessary to systematically replace part of the water. They can be kept in a South American biotope aquarium with other turtles, small cichlids and cuiras. In a social aquarium with small razors, dyes, labyrinth fish and barbs.

If we want to raise a larger number of fry, we should prepare a spawning tank with dimensions of at least 45x30x30 cm. Place finely leafed plants, e.g.

java moss, into the aquarium, and on the bottom a mesh with fine meshes so that only the spawn can pass through them. The tortoises can be bred in a group where there is one female for each male. We feed the fish abundantly with live and frozen food. When breeding fish in pairs before the planned spawning, it is recommended to separate females from males and to feed them abundantly. Water temperature in the breeding aquarium increased to about 27-28 ° C.

Water from slightly acidic to neutral. When the females are clearly thicker (full of eggs) and the males are more intensely colored, transfer the thickest female and the prettiest male (in the evening) to the spawning tank. Spawning usually takes place on the second day in the morning. As soon as we spot the eggs, we catch the parents. Hatching occurs after 24-36 hours.

After the next 3-4 days, it begins to swim freely. We feed the fry with micro foods until they are able to eat artemia and the larvae. Roe and fry are very light sensitive.
