Aquarium fish: Harlequin rasbora (Trigonostigma heteromorpha)
Size: 3.5 cm
Water temperature: 21-28 ° C
Aquarium volume: 54 l
Harlequin rasbora (Trigonostigma heteromorpha) – a common fish in aquarium farming.
Asia . Wedge shakers inhabit smaller, darkened rivers and streams, and wetlands in Malaysia, Thailand, and some Indonesia.
Characteristics and disposition
They reach a length of 4.5 cm. A characteristic dark wedge-shaped spot on the body, more extensive than in related species: razbora hengela , razbora espei .
The spot in males is cut perpendicularly at the front and pointed at the bottom of the body. The males are a bit slender than the rounder females. The predominant color is orange. Very mobile fish, they need a lot of space to swim. Gregarious ones stick very well to the shoal.
Recommended min. are 10 individuals. In the group they are bolder and show more natural behavior. Males also acquire more intense colors, being able to compete with each other for the favor of females. Harlequin rasboras do not have any special requirements as to water parameters, recommended for those who begin their adventure with aquaristics.
Nutrition and feeding
In the wild, the Razbora wedge feeds on insects, larvae and plankton. In an aquarium, it takes most of its food. They will be in the best condition if we provide them with high-quality dry, frozen and live food.
54 liters is the minimum for the Razbor herd. Decorate the aquarium with roots, branches and broad-leaved plants, such as Cryptocoryna , Anubias , and Mikrozorium.
They show a nicer coloration in a tank with a dark substrate. They like shaded places. If we want to reproduce their natural environment, oak leaves, alder cones, etc. materials that release tannins and humic compounds into the water will be useful. The light is best suppressed by floating vegetation.
Razbory can be kept in a general aquarium with small fish (e.g. neon innesa , ramireza cichlid , panda cuirass ).
The wedge-shaped razbora spawns on the underside of the leaves. In well-kept aquariums, spawning occurs quite accidentally, without the intervention of the breeder. We will have more control over reproduction in the spawning tank.
Shade the tank, and on the bottom place a mesh grate with fine meshes and put in broad-leaved plants, such as Cryptocoryne, Mikrozorium, Anubias. Water for reproduction has a pH in the range of 5.0-6.0 with a hardness of 1-5 ° H and a temperature of 26-28 ° C. Fish should be around 1 year old. Feed copiously with live food a few days before spawning. When the females are swollen and the males are more intensely colored, in the evening we transfer the spawners to the previously prepared aquarium.
Spawning usually takes place in the morning. We keep the fish for 3-4 days, if it has not spawned, try with others. Parents eat eggs, so adult specimens should be caught as soon as we see the eggs. Hatching takes about 24-48 hours. The fry begin to swim after about a week.
We feed small fish with dust or slurry until they are large enough to be able to eat small live food.
