Dwarf loach (Ambastaia sidthimunki ) – a small aquarium fish from the Piskorzowace family.

Asia . Dwarf loaches inhabit mainly medium and large, slowly flowing rivers in the Mekong basin. They are also found in flooded rice fields.

Characteristics and disposition

They grow up to 6 cm in length.

The body is covered with a characteristic pattern resembling a chessboard. Gender difficult to distinguish . Adult females are fuller and slightly larger than males. Males have more elongated snouts and prominent lips. A mild fish with complex behavior and interesting rituals, therefore it should be kept in a herd of at least 5-6 individuals, 10 or more are recommended.

They hide in solitude or can be aggressive towards similarly shaped fish. If we buy a pair or three, it is likely that the strongest fish will dominate and attack the others, making it impossible to feed them. They spend most of their time at the bottom.

Nutrition and feeding

Dwarf loaches feed on invertebrates, insects and snails, which they efficiently extract from their shells. However, they should not be a way to get rid of the snail infestation, as they often choose more readily available food.

They will not despise plants with delicate leaves. We can feed them with dry, live and frozen food supplemented with vegetables or fruit, e.g. cucumber, melon, spinach, zucchini.

Dwarf loaches require an aquarium with dimensions of at least 75x35x30 cm. Fish like to get to know their surroundings, a large number of decorations are recommended: stones, roots, branches, pots, etc.

They often press into gaps, caves and crevices, therefore the elements of the surroundings cannot have sharp edges. The aquarium should be covered. Muffled light, preferably with floating vegetation. Water well oxygenated and spotlessly clean, changed once a week (30% -50%). Loons are sensitive to high concentrations of nitrates .

They should not be introduced into a newly set up aquarium. We only plant the tank with plants with durable leaves. Loaches will not be good companionship for free-swimming fish with long veil-like fins, such as the fish , the ramireza cichlid or the guppy . In a large reservoir, they can live with, for example, fish such as loaches, lawn mowers or other cyprinids and catfish.

Reproduction very difficult .

In nature, the fish migrate seasonally to spawn. Commercially available, they come from harvesting or breeding farms where hormones are used to stimulate reproduction.
