Asia. Endemic species, inhabiting only the rushing rivers and mountain streams of the state of Kerala and Karnataka in southern India.

Characteristics and disposition

Reaches a length of 15 cm.

Streamlined, silver body resembling a torpedo (hence one of its names – Red Lined Torpedo Barb ). On it, an iridescent red streak above the dark stripe along the body, a red dorsal fin. The caudal fin ends in black and yellow stripes. In adult fish, a greenish tinge appears on the head. There is also a gold variety that does not have a black belt on the body.

They have a pair of whiskers around their mouths to help them locate food. Gender is difficult to distinguish . During the spawning period, females are slightly more rounded, and sometimes less colored than males. These barbs are very active, usually calm, but on the condition that we keep them in a sufficiently large tank and in a flock of at least six fish . Fish kept individually or in smaller groups often get into fights.

Nutrition and feeding

Undisputed fish that accept any available food. The best condition is ensured by a diet rich in live or frozen foods (bloodworm, daphnia, artemia) with the addition of dry and plant foods (spirulina, vegetables).

The aquarium should be at least 120 cm long, densely planted in places, with ample space for swimming, and equipped with a good filter that produces a strong current of water. Stones and roots can be used for decoration. Plants can be problematic because they can be dug up from the ground.

The durable ones, attached to decorations, such as Anubiasy, will work. Denison barbbs can tolerate slightly lower temperatures than other aquarium fish, but rapid changes in temperature are not recommended. They do not tolerate the accumulation of pollutants in the water. Water should be well-oxygenated and regularly changed, slightly acidic to alkaline. In an Asian biotope aquarium, they can be kept with other gentle barbs, zebrafish , razors or labyrinth fish .

In a social aquarium with South American bites , catfish , or cichlids with similar environmental requirements.

They breed randomly in the aquarium and it is a very rare phenomenon . There is little information on spawning conditions. Until recently, fish in stores was mainly harvested. Currently, they are successfully bred on breeding farms.

Fish, however, are stimulated with the use of special hormones. It breeds in acidic water and the fish spawn among the plants.
