Character American bully
American Bullies are descended from the American Pit Bull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier. A number of other breeds have also influenced the Bullies’ appearance and temperament. These include the English Bulldog, Old English Bulldog and American Bulldog. There are four types of Bullies: XL, Classic, Standard and Pocket.
The United Kennel Club recognized the American Bullies as a separate breed on July 15, 2013.
The American Bully is not a recognized dog breed in Europe. The related dog breeds are on the list of so-called dangerous dogs. Therefore, keeping bullies in some federal states requires a permit.
Bullies are real powerhouses. The dog’s body and limbs are strong and muscular.
They reach a shoulder height of about 50 centimeters. This makes them one of the big dogs.
The Bullies’ distinctive head is large and broad with a square muzzle. Jaws and teeth appear powerful. The eyes are medium sized and set wide apart.
The dog’s pricked ears make it look attentive and curious.
The shoulders and back are broad and strong, the hips are somewhat narrower. The American Bully has a thin tail that reaches to the hock. The feet appear rather short compared to the rest of the body.
Bullies walk confidently and boldly.
The dogs radiate interest and a thirst for adventure. When running, the animals look athletic. Physical activity is usually effortless for bullies.
Because the American Bully is not an established pedigree dog, their coat and colors will vary. The animals usually have short, smooth fur.
The fur colors brown and gray are common.
Contrary to the attack dog cliché, the bully is not aggressive or unstable. On the contrary: Because of its resilient and good-natured nature, it is also suitable as a family dog. His nature is neither aggressive nor fearful and shy. The animals are generally balanced, calm and loyal.
The appearance makes the bully a good protector. The animal defends what is dear to it. However, he is also open to strangers and trusting. The naturally easy-going and not very bark-loving fellows are therefore not the perfect watchdogs.
Diet American bully
The powerful dogs can weigh up to 45 kilograms. Bullies generally eat a lot because of their physique. Pay attention to food with sufficient protein content (at least 30 percent). The strong musculature of the dog needs constant replenishment.
A little “baby fat” doesn’t hurt American Bully puppies.
A young dog should eat at least three times a day. The fat supports the growth of the puppy. The animal’s body converts the flab into the muscle mass distinctive of Bullies.
But be careful: Don’t overdo it – despite the heartbreaking dog look. Too much high-energy food will make your bully grow too fast.
Tendons, bones and joints of the animal would suffer.
As the animal gets older, the metabolism changes. You should therefore adjust the eating habits when your bully is about a year old. Now give him a portion of his food three times a day – no more. Being overweight is very harmful to your dog.
Vitamins and minerals are very important for the lifespan (about 10 years) of the animal. Rely on high-quality feed here. Vitamin supplements and other dietary supplements are plentifully available in the market. Good dog food should cover the most important nutrients.
Make sure your dog always has fresh water in his bowl.
Change the water twice a day. The animal must provide its body volume with sufficient liquid.
Happy and healthy Bullies need lots of exercise. Walk your dog three times a day. Your walk together should last at least half an hour.
Bullies like to swim. If you let your dog into the water, he can move in a way that is easy on the joints.
Because of his massive stature, he needs gentle types of exercise. It also gives him the opportunity to cool off on hot days.
Half an hour of natural sunlight is an absolute must. If you have a busy workday, reserve enough time for it. If necessary, you may be able to ask a friend or neighbor.
Short walks at dawn or after sunset do not have the same effect.
The large and powerful dogs are not suitable for a small city apartment. The animals are sensitive to loud traffic and other noises in the city. Even if you have a spacious apartment – the animal must often be able to romp in nature. A house with a yard in the suburbs is a better home for a bully.
When training your dog, always consider how strong it is. In the first 18 months of life, the dog must learn to use its power properly. Let him interact early on with other dogs, the other pets, or the kids. Get the puppy used to rough play behavior immediately.
Since the Bullies are people-oriented and good-natured, they can easily integrate into a family.
Willing to learn and obedient as they are, they quickly accept the hierarchy. It’s just important to show them early and consistently who’s in charge.
Animals seek approval from their master. Praise your bully when he’s learned something new. Harsh penalties are not appropriate.
A straight and loving upbringing will make you inseparable.
Healthy bullies have to go to the vet regularly. Vaccinations and deworming treatments are mandatory. The effort for fur and dental care is comparatively low.
The ancestors of the Bullie have a long history. For example, the English bulldogs came to America with the first immigrants. Because of their looks, the settlers liked to keep them as farm dogs. You should take care of the livestock and keep unwanted visitors away.
In the 17th century, the strong animals were used to fight bulls.
The name “Bulldog” or “Bullenbeisser” comes from this time. It was used to describe the area of application of the animals. In the USA, American bulldogs are sometimes still used to hunt wild boar.
The laws of many countries prohibit dog fighting. But they still take place in criminal milieus.
With the cliché of the “fighting dog” one does many animals – including the Bullies – an injustice.
The American Bully enjoys great popularity in the rap scene. Its appearance makes it a sought-after companion in music videos. Hard shell, soft core: Many rappers are very attached to their bully.
In America, the Bullies were bred from the established bulldog breeds about 40 years ago.
The goal of breeding should be a family-friendly companion dog. In the first years of breeding, some defects appeared. The canine type is now in relatively good health.
Depending on their origin and breeder, Bullies are relatively expensive. In the US, prices range from $800 to $20,000.
The high-priced puppies are descendants of well-known bullies. In this country, a bully costs about 1,000 to 2,000 euros.
