Character American bulldog

The most striking feature of this breed are the visual characteristics of the mixed breed, which result from crossing the American Staffordshire Terrier breed with the American Pit Bull Terrier. In the course of time the striking physique in particular has crystallized through the crossing of other breeds .
It is not only powerful, but also elegant at the same time. The American Bulldog’s muzzle is a healthy length and does not have an underbite. Eyes and ears are also subject to healthy breeding traits.

This breed’s coat is dense, short, and shiny . Most of the dogs have a white coat, often with a few spots. However, other colors are also possible, such as brown or a brindle coat.
In addition to the optical features, the breed is particularly convincing due to its character idiosyncrasies: The American Bulldog is considered a family and companion dog and is described as particularly gentle and sensitive. Dealing with children is also particularly positively emphasized.

The health of the American Bulldog is very robust due to various breeding criteria.
Nevertheless, one should not forget that this is a very self-confident and intelligent four-legged friend . If there is a lack of loving consistency in upbringing, the American Bulldog likes to set its own rules and be dominant . With clear rules, however, he subordinates himself to his people and loves to take part in family events.

Diet American bulldog

From a species-appropriate point of view, it is advisable for the American Bulldog breed to ensure a balanced, meat-rich diet . This does not have to mean that you only have to cook fresh food for your dog from now on. If you decide to feed conventional dry or wet food, you should simply pay attention to the composition of the food.
That means: If you look at the list of ingredients, meat should be declared first and the product should be low-grain processed. The diet should always be high in protein.

If you decide on dry food, you should make sure that the kibbles offered are not too small, but also not too big. Since the American Bulldog is usually very greedy , the manufacturer’s instructions regarding portioning of the food should also be taken into account. Fresh water should be available for your dog at all times.
It’s also important for your American Bulldog to rest after eating, as the breed is prone to torsion . This fact can be prevented by taking appropriate rest periods.

It is also a good idea to split your daily portion of food into 2 meals . So the stomach is less full. This also helps prevent gastric torsion.

Grooming

Due to the nature of the American Bulldog’s coat, grooming is not particularly time-consuming . It is perfectly sufficient if you comb your dog at regular intervals. Not only is this important for the coat’s texture, but it also helps you keep your American Bulldog’s skin and coat free of bugs and parasites.
Suitable tools in this context are a soft brush and a knobbed glove . These tools make it particularly easy to remove loose hair.

The positive side effect: Your American Bulldog will particularly enjoy this petting – it strengthens your mutual bond. You should also get your American Bulldog used to having a bath so that you can clean it properly if it gets very dirty. We recommend using a particularly mild dog shampoo for this – this protects the skin and the natural protective barrier.
It’s also a good idea to have both ear and eye cleaners at home. American Bulldogs are prone to lacrimation and ear infections .

Both should therefore be checked regularly by the owner.

History

American Bulldogs, like all mastiff-like dog breeds, are descended from the guard and shepherd dogs of ancient Greece . They should assist in slaughter and fend off wild animals. At the beginning of the seventeenth century, the breed was used to fight bulls , hence the origin of the name “Bulldog”. Most of the breeds crossed into the American Bulldog thus came to the United States as immigrant dogs.
In the course of the settler movement, the breed has increasingly developed into a hunting helper – for example when hunting wild boar.

By crossing many breeds – namely American Bulldog, French Bulldog, English Bulldog, Olde English Bulldogge and Molossoid breeds – the American Bulldog, which is so popular today, gradually emerged with all of its character traits and beautiful appearance. In Europe, American Bullies are now mainly kept as family and companion dogs. The FCI has not officially recognized this breed so far. Today’s breeders are still trying to establish uniform breed characteristics. In the USA, the breed has been officially recognized by the American Kennel Club since 2019.

American bulldog Accessories

To keep your American Bulldog you need an XL dog bed on which your darling can relax, two bowls, a leash and harness. It is particularly important to ensure that the utensils you buy are robust and cannot be easily destroyed , because the American Bulldog is a powerhouse .
For his and your safety, you should therefore pay attention to high-quality accessories . When choosing chew toys (particularly important for your American Bulldog’s dental care) you should make sure that the parts used are not so small that the American Bulldog can swallow them .
For the very simple coat care you need a soft brush and, if necessary, a special dog shampoo that is suitable for the sensitive skin of the four-legged friends.

Ear and eye cleaners should also be available. Make sure they don’t contain alcohol.
